A heat pump is a smart choice for the Northshore area, where mild winters and long, hot summers make an all-in-one heating and cooling system a practical fit. Step 1: In-Home Assessment and Load Calculation
Before anything is ordered or scheduled, a Southern Air technician visits your home to perform a thorough assessment.
This includes a Manual J load calculation, the industry-standard method for determining exactly how much heating and cooling capacity your home requires. It accounts for square footage, ceiling height, insulation, window orientation, and the local climate.
Getting the size right matters. A system that’s too large will short-cycle, leaving your home feeling humid even when the temperature is technically where you want it. One that’s too small will run constantly without ever quite getting there. The load calculation removes the guesswork.
Step 2: Equipment Selection
Once we have your load calculation results, we’ll walk you through equipment options at different price and efficiency tiers.
Heat pumps are rated by SEER2 for cooling efficiency and HSPF2 for heating efficiency. Higher-rated systems cost more upfront but deliver real savings on monthly utility bills, especially over a long cooling season.
We’ll also confirm whether your existing ductwork can support the new system. Leaky or undersized ducts will undercut the performance of even the best equipment, so if repairs are needed, we’ll discuss that before anything is confirmed.
Step 3: Removing the Old System
On installation day, the first task is safely disconnecting and removing your existing equipment.
Any remaining refrigerant is recovered in accordance with EPA regulations, which must be handled by a certified technician. The old outdoor unit and indoor components are removed and disposed of properly. We take care to protect your home throughout this process.
Step 4: Installing the New Heat Pump
With the old system out, installation of the new equipment begins. The indoor air handler is set in place and connected to your duct system. Refrigerant lines are run between the indoor and outdoor units.
Electrical connections are made to power both units and connect them to your thermostat. If you’re upgrading to a smart thermostat, this is the right time to do it. The outdoor unit is secured on a level pad following manufacturer specifications throughout.
For homes without existing ductwork, a ductless AC heat pump system may be the better path. We’ll identify that during the assessment and explain your options clearly.
Step 5: Refrigerant Charging and System Testing
After installation is complete, the system is evacuated to remove any moisture and air from the refrigerant lines, then charged with the correct amount of refrigerant.
This step is critical. Too little or too much refrigerant affects efficiency, cooling performance, and compressor lifespan. We then run a full performance test, checking supply and return air temperatures, airflow at every register, and all electrical components.
Any adjustments are made before we close out the job.
Step 6: Walkthrough and Handoff
Before we leave, we walk you through how to operate your new system and thermostat, what size filter to use and how often to change it, and what to expect in terms of normal sounds and behavior.
We’ll also register your equipment warranty and talk you through the value of keeping up with AC maintenance to protect your investment. Annual tune-ups are the most reliable way to catch small issues before they become expensive ones.
How Long Does Heat Pump Installation Take?
A standard installation typically takes four to eight hours. More complex projects, such as those requiring electrical panel upgrades or ductwork modifications, may take longer or need a follow-up visit.
